Polar Bears
With it powerful Claws this animal can plunge into the freezing waters of the Arctic and survive !
Recently in library we have been researching about animal adaptations and how animals adapt to the environment. Our task has included animal facts and information.
What does animal adaptation mean?
Animal adaptation means that as an animal’s environment changes then the animal needs to get used to the environment. Over time animals may change physically and how they live.
ANIMAL / CLASSIFICATION : Polar Bear ( Mammal)
DESCRIPTION OF ENVIRONMENT : Polar bears live in icy ,snowy,freezing conditions.Polar Bears live in the Arctic Circle (South Pole ) they do not live in the North Pole . They can also be found in Russia,Canada and Greenland.Sometimes temperatures can drop to -45 degrees Celsius!
PHYSICAL APPEARANCES:
Polar Bears are the biggest land living predators on earth. They have webs between their toes.
DIET :
Polar Bears main food is seals, young walruses, beluga whales and dolphins.
STRUCTURAL ADAPTATIONS:
Polar Bears fur is not white. There are 2 layers of transparent fur ,their is spaces of air between each hair . These spaces scatter light and makes their fur look white . This helps them blend into the snow. Their skin is actually black.
BEHAVIOURAL ADAPTIONS:
Polar Bears are excellent swimmers. They dig caves to protect themselves from the cold winds. Polar Bears are not overly aggressive but the males can get a bit angry during mating season .
PHYSIOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS:
Polar Bears have a thick layer of blubber (fat) to help keep them warm .Polar Bears have flexible necks, which helps them swim .
